就在所谓文明的(civilized) 城(city/urban area) 里人们(citizens/dwellers/urbanites) 在 咖啡馆(cafe) 里喝 咖啡(coffee) 的时候，一群(crowd/crew) 平日里和 泥块(clod)打交道的乡巴佬/乡下人(clodhoppers/countrymen)，正乌泱泱(cloudy) 一大片，像乌鸦(crow) 一样 云集(converge) 在集镇(town)上，其中许多人拥挤(crowd) 在一个转角(corner) 处，并围成一圈(gathered around in a circle)，正在围观(watch) 某个 马戏团(circus) 的滑稽戏(farce) 表演，只见小丑(clown)头戴 花冠(crown) ，脸遮假面/面罩(mask)，一只手 装饰(decorate/decoration) 得像 大公鸡(big rooster) 的爪子(claw)一样，另一只手又装饰的如牛的蹄子(hoof)一般，一会像 公鸡(cock) 一样地啼鸣(crow)，一会又发出如 母牛(cow) 似的 低叫声(a low cry) ，而现场众声 喧哗 /大声地喊叫(clamor)，一片 混乱(chaos) 不堪，到处(everywhere)充斥着各种嘈杂之声(noises)，地上亦 四处(around) 散落(scattered) 着 玉米(corn) 做的 爆米花(popcorn)，突然大雨倾盆而下，人们顿作鸟兽散去，只用几个 流浪汉(vagrants)，口嚼(chew) 口香糖(bubble gum)，顶着 瓢泼大雨(pouring rain) 慢悠悠地(slowly) 走在 街道(street) 上。
